What different aspects of music would make you want to visit a destination?

What would be your reasons for choosing to visit the destination? For example would it be for a one-off music concert, a music festival, taking a music tour, visiting an area where a famous musician was born/developed their talents etc. Please give examples of any of your own experiences.

  1. It would need to be more than just a concert. I'd be more inclined to visit a place based on its music history if there were tours or possibly museams explaining that history. For example, in Salzburg there is lot made of it being Mozarts birthplace with museam, tours and classical music street performances.

  2. For me, it would need to be more than a one-off event, perhaps more like a weekend or week long event, where you have the chance to experience new things such as music tours etc. A one-off event will initially attract attention, but in order to maintain it, more will need to be offered long term.

  3. I would visit a destination for a one-off concert if it was a certain type of music I really liked. I think people would visit a destination such as Belfast solely to hear their favourite singer or group. I have taken a few one-day trips to Dublin for various concerts. It's a great way to attract people to Belfast.

  4. I would visit an area for a one off concert or a festival. I've also visited Nashville because of the history of music there.

  5. I would visit an area for a one off concert or preferably a fesival or such event. I think it would also make it more attractive if there were other events such as tours etc to attract people.

  6. Have travelled many times just for concerts, all over Ireland and the UK. I think to make a larger journey it has to be something more, a one-off regroup of a very good band or a music festival. E.g. we used to travel to Hamburg every year for the Wacken festival, and of course accompanied the Council to Austin last year for SxSW. I think I'd have to really love a band to travel somewhere to see their heritage, but I have friends who've gone to Liverpool to see The Cavern etc. I definitely would love to have gone to New Orleans to experience the whole Jazz thing!

  7. I really want to visit the Edinburgh Tattoo because of my love for military style music and marching bands. The competence and precision in which it is done is what I really admire. Apart from that I wouldnt really visit a destination solely for music reasons, but I might take a music tour while I am in a certain place if it would be the sort of music I would like.

  8. I would think that it forms a part of the package. Cultural and entertainmpent opportunities are a very important part of any decision to re-visit a known destination especially whjen you have links friends or family ties. They contribute greatly to the overall experience and enjoyment of such a visit and would be likely to make them more attaractive and more frequent. For my part I doubt that a concert alone would be sufficient motivation to visit a particular destination unless it was a top top act for which I was unable to obtain access in another way.

  9. For me personally the only reason i've been to or ever wanted to go to Dublin was for three huge concerts, metallica and bon jovi twice, and the only reason I went there was cause it was the only place in Ireland that they were doing concerts. I guess that was due to venue size, Dublin has plenty of choice.. o2, rds, punchestown race course.. etc.

Another thing, it would be good if Belfast got a huge festival like oxegen, tenants vital, and belsonic were/is going this way but again the venue limits things, ie not very many tickets would be released and therefore less advertisement outside of Belfast I presume. But if these things were overcome, which they recently have, attracting several huge bands to the Odyssey as part of reunion tours it would definitely increase Belfast's music tourism.

  10. Perfect example is a festival which is new, new place to visit and a great lineup.

You have festivals such as Isle Of Wight - not many would go there without this festival, similar for T in the park aswell as Abersoch(wakestock festival) so without these new adventures, these towns/islands would be dead and no money coming into those areas. I've never been to these places but would not only for the music but see the heritage and history of the areas.

  11. there is no music in belfast. belfast is famous because of titanic (positive aspect) and also big troubles (very negative) and that would be very hard to change

  12. Visiting an area where a musician was born

  13. Belfast in general needs a lot of positive promotion to escape its troublesome past. Music is one way to begin the tourist regeneration of the city.I would imagine that a music festival, with a wide variety of artists and music to suit all ages, would be a good reason for visiting the destination. Edinburgh has its comedy festival every year, Belfast could have their music festival every year

  14. A fesival that includes folk, pop and rock would definately be attractive, the facilities on the old Docks combined with the vibrant pun scene would allow a combination of acts, large and small.

  15. I would visit to see a good musical eg I went to Dublin just to see Phantom of the opera many years ago. Would have loved to see Les Miserables and The Lion King if I only had the time.

  16. I would visit an area for the purposes of watching a concert or festival. Although to attract tourists i believe it would need to be a well known highly famous band or singer.

  17. I would visit a place for a one off concert or festival if it featured an artist or musician I really like. I wouldn't mind just going for one night or perhaps making it into a weekend/week away and doing other things while I'm there, depending on where the concert/festival was. I wouldn't however visit an area just to do a music tour or visit somewhere where an artist was born, simply because it wouldn't interest me enough. If I was on holiday somewhere anyway and discovered there was a famous landmark where an artist grew up etc I might go to see it but I wouldn't travel to a place solely for this reason. For example, while in London i went on the open top bus tour and saw the house where the Beatles practised for much of their career, which was interesting to see but I wouldnt have gone to London just to see this.

  18. i think it would take a festival to attract me to an area where i wasnt otherwise keen to visit. i dont think i would travel to liverpool to go on a beatles tour if i didnt also want to go for some other reason. so in terms of belfast, music tours might attract me but only if i was coming anyway. perhaps a festival could be incorporated with tours at a certain time of year to promote belfast as a greater place of interest for music fans

  20. Personally, I am a big Snow Patrol fan. Therefore if they were to put on a concert in their hometown it would definitely make me want to travel to Northern Ireland to see them perform.

  21. I think if a festival such as Tenants vital was to be held again this would defintitwly be a reason to visit Belfast solely for this reason and in preference of going somewhere else. I saw The Killers in Belfast, if we could attract these type of hugely successful bands then people would travel solely to see them.

I think people would never see Belfast solely as a music tourism destination because it has such a rich culture and heritage already, whilst other music destinations eg Glastonbury, dont have anything else worth going there for.

  22. For me the only reasons on this list to visit a city would be a concert or festival, but my preference would be the concert.

  23. I am not sure i would book a trip based around a one off concert, but would definitely think of going to a festival if there was a good line up.

  24. A big annual festival featuring traditional and up-and-coming Belfast bands would be a HUGE success and put Belfast on the map. So many people know the great Belfast artists but few realize where they are from.

  25. I went to Liverpool especially to have the Beatles experience, ferry across the Mersey, Magical Mystery Tour etc..

I would go to a city in the UK to see a band/singer I know I would never see elsewhere.

I have been to Dublin to see bands/singers who were not coming to play in Belfast.

  26. I think music festivals are the most popular reason for people to visit a destination solely for music purposes. I have friends who have went to Spain for the Benicassim International Festival, and Belgium for Pukkelpop. Because festivals last for a few days there is more reason to make the trip.

I think people are only really likely to visit a destination for a one off music concert if the person or band playing isn't playing somewhere closer to where they live.

Things such as music tours and visiting an area where a famous musician was born would be popular with fans, but I think people are more likely to do these types of things when they are already in a place, rather than as a reason for choosing a destination.

  27. Would usually tie in a visit to see music with something else if I go to a different place for the weekend or a short break. Would rarely travel far just for music alone, so there needs to be something else - sport, culture, visiting friends or family - to get me fully interested.

  28. I would like to visit and see where musicians i respected grew up and try to understand something about their background and how that influenced their music

  29. I'd be inclined to visit a place for a music festival - it makes it worthwhile going, especially if you have to pay a lot for the journey and travel quite a distance. I've been to the Cork Jazz Festival, the Willy Clancy week in Co. Clare and the Frankie Kennedy 'Scoil Gheimhridh' in Gaoth Dobhair. All had workshops as well as concerts which made it even more enjoyable for participants.

  30. Seeing a band live
    Going to a music festival

  31. For me to make a specific trip somewhere it would have to be for more than just a one-off concert. I think that some kind of music festival incorporating traditional and famous Irish bands would be a great success in Belfast.

  32. if it was a very special event i would make a one time trip but generally there has to be more available as you need a complete package to make a good visit anywhere

  33. The only reason I've been to Milton Keynes was for a concert (AC/DC). If Belfast can attract big name acts that aren't playing everywhere else in Ireland/UK then people will travel there. Hopefully they'll see a bit of Belfast when they are travelling and will return again. I've also travelled to Graceland, Memphis and Nashville while living in the US. I'm not a big country music fan but I still found the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville to be very interesting and fun. These musical attractions are all very kid friendly which makes good business sense as they are selling tickets to families of 4 or 5 at a time. Even places like Beale St in Memphis which are lined with bars are totally family friendly during the day with lots of live music playing.
