Yes indeed! The movie Don't Look Now and the novella Death in Venice (and the film) made an already romantic notion of the city impossible to resist - now a city I love - even though it is a very sorry state these days.
It wouldn't be the sole reason I'd go to Dublin but there's a definite arts attraction in that city, even if just to visit the sites written about by Joyce or sung about by the Dubliners. There's also an embrace of culture that I think we could learn from. It enriches the experience of visiting the city.
I travelled from London to Shakespeare country to visit his tomb and especially Anne Hathaways cottage because I had an inspirational tutor in college who gave me a lasting love for all the works of Shakespeare, in particular his sonnets. So literature really did influence me to travel to a certain place.
Other than travel to a festival.. NO. But it is an important element when I am thinking of visiting a particular place/town and I would normally check the local concert possibilities in advance (well in advance in order to have a chance of tickets). The possibiity of attractive music events would play a role in choice of destination.
Yes, several books I've read have given me a major interest in the countries they are about, two of the top places I wish to visit are Egypt and Africa and this is due to Christian jacq who is an author who writes Egyptian books, wilbur smith who writes about south Africa.. etc
The advertisement of music festivals on radio plays a major part in influencing people to go to those concerts/cities as its usually the only way they've heard of these concerts. For example radio ones big weekend.
The cliffs of Kerry are featured in a westlife music video and ever since I saw them i've wanted to visit them.
Tv showing concerts such as reading and Leeds festival after the event have always inspired me to go out and look into going next year.
Media can play a big part on creating a buzz about "new place to travel to" some follow the hype but some are influenced by friends thoughts about certain places. Someone above has mentioned watching back music festival highlights and thinking I want to experience this next year. I feel I come under the highlights category as I'm going to be visting a certain festival in the summer.
Also film sets seem to influence many folk for their summer trips so the media/tourism works.
media has a big influence but i cant think about any group or singer coming from belfast. i usually travel because i am interested about history, architecture but there is no way i would spend money and travel to follow some music. sorry
The media has not directly affected any of my decisions to visit places. I go because I like to see new places and find out about different cultures and their history. If there is a music festival, concert etc, which interests me, when I'm there, then I might go to it as part of the whole experience.
Media - TV, films, newspapers etc can influence but if you use Glastobury as an example, it grew mainly by word of mouth. The general marketing of Belfast should include reference to music with a hyperlink. One key point is a user freindly ticket process - most are really hopeless.
All kinds of things can influence your choice of destination. From films, books, TV, newspapers and radio. I have been influenced by many things e.g. pictures of Venice, films based in New England, music in Nashville (my husbands choice not mine!), folk festival in Cambridge etc. seeing Christy moore in Dublin. The internet is a great way of finding out whats on and where.
The internet and television mainly. Youtube and coverage on tv of live concerts/festivals has made me very interested to maybe visit Glastonbury at some stage in my life.
I have always wanted to visit America and this is solely due to the image of the country that has been created through films and American tv series such as friends.
for me films have a big influence on making me want to visit somewhere. they tend to show an area in light of the overall mood of the film, so in 'love actually' london is filmed at christmas and seems a really nice place to be, despite in reality it probably being one of the most stressful places on earth at that time of year. although fictional, somewhere like 'gotham city' in batman films is a dark place full of crime and so not somewhere i would want to visit given the chance.
I believe that the media has a great influence over people. For example, there is great hype surrounding festivals such as Oxegen, and this encourages people to go to it.
Advertising and promotion are good at attracting attention but I always speak to people that have been to the places I am thinking of going, a good word of mouth reputation would convince me to travel to a certain place rather than solely media influence.
We have gone to Dublin for the weekend with the sole purpose of a concert on the Friday night. Giving us the opportunity for some relaxation on the Saturday. We have gone on London on theatre breaks. Radio advertising and interviews on tv are how we chose what to see. I find that newspaper advertising is too close to the event.
I follow classical music more than anything else, for this reason I would (and have) participate in music festivals/concerts abroad. I have dreams of seeing my favorite operas in different opera houses around the world (although really just in Europe) and as I age and have more cash flow I would love to travel with the purpose of experiencing music in each city I visit. I would say that my local media in Seattle has encouraged me to pursue experiencing music more and more abroad and seeing what other cultures and countries have to offer.
I think all kinds of media can influence us to do all kinds of things - including choosing our travel destinations - including books, movies, music and TV. Brian Atlanta, GA, USA
kate said I have been influenced by radio to book a concert (either by music being promoted or interviews heard) and also by watching a concert on tv. On a few occasions I have booked accommodation also and stayed for a weekend.
Jerry Anderson plays a lot of local bands/singers and after hearing Ricky Warwick played on his show I went to see him at MountStewart. Programmes on TV and books can encourage you to visit places. I went to Liguria after reading the Annie Hawes books and visited the places she talked about. I went to Liverpool for a weekend especially to have the Beatles experience, ferry across the Mersy, Magical Mystery Tour and visited the Beatles museum and Cavern Club.
When I was in Sligo I visited W. B. Yeats' Grave and went on the Rose of Innisfree boat tour. I was already in Sligo on a family holiday but I was influenced to visit these places because I had studied Yeats' poetry at A-Level.
Media is a big influence - without it is is difficult to know what's on. The web is becoming increasingly important, with weekly emails, RSS feeds from venues, promoters etc. Sometimes it is just a spur of the moment thing, but increasingly now I have to plan ahead for music so media is vital.
Music (in particular Irish traditional music) has influenced me to travel to a destination for Fleadhs, workshops and concerts. There's nothing like having low price tuition from one of your idols in an informal setting!
anything you see and hear in any form of media can influence where you would go. generally the more positive or exciting the event you see the more likely you are to want to visit the place you have just seen.
Film has definitely influenced me to travel but not necessarily for musical reasons. While living in US I've taken many road trips to places I've seen in movies. I've been to Madison County, Iowa to see the covered bridges and I've sat in the bleachers watching an imaginary baseball game on the Field of Dreams at a farm in Iowa. While these were not the final destinations on the roadtrips I've always planned a few detours to see these places and they have never disappointed.
I think media has a big influence on people as it targets such a wide audience. The radio has influenced me such as the advertising of concert events.

ReplyDeleteOthers would be Paris and Edinburgh.
Yes, tv shows, old movies and music (in particular the beach boys) influenced my decision to travel to california.

ReplyDeleteDefinitely! I think the media is a huge influence. Especially the radio for concerts and festivals.

ReplyDeleteYes, in particular radio. Where music tourism is concerned hearing highlight groups and news of concerts on the radio can encourage you to book gigs.

ReplyDeleteYes it has from Aztec hornpipes in Peru to drums in Nigeria to the carnival in Rio

ReplyDeleteI guess just seeing online buzz - viral word of mouth about a gig or a festival would make me want to go
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! Media is a huge influence, in particular, books, television, radio and film.
